Our Farm

What are Microgreens?

Microgreens are young, edible seedlings of vegetables and herbs, harvested just after they develop their first true leaves. They are typically harvested 7–21 days after germination, making them nutrient-dense compared to fully grown plants.

Common microgreens include sunflower, radish, broccoli, pea shoots, and purple Kohlrabi and wheatgrass.

Health Benefits of Microgreens:

  1. Nutrient-rich: Microgreens are packed with vitamins (A, C, E, and K), minerals, and antioxidants, often containing higher nutrient levels than their mature counterparts.
  2. Antioxidants: They are a great source of antioxidants, which help protect the body against oxidative stress and may reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
  3. Supports Heart Health: The nutrients found in microgreens, particularly polyphenols, may help reduce the risk of heart disease.
  4. Digestive Health: Fiber in microgreens supports a healthy gut, aiding digestion and promoting a balanced microbiome.
  5. Boosts Immune System: High levels of vitamins, particularly vitamin C, can strengthen the immune system.
  6. Low in Calories: Microgreens are low-calorie, making them a great option for nutrient-dense, weight-conscious diets.

Our Story

My family and I have been gardening and growing herbs and vegetables for more than twenty years.  Our house, both inside and out is full of plants of all kinds.  Since we moved to the countryside, in Michigan in 2022, we have had a lot more space to grow things.  In 2023 I decided to take things up a notch and began growing microgreens.  My decision started out being for health reasons.  In time I discovered that eating these microgreens on a regular basis actually made me feel better physically.  I was getting my health back!

Ever since moving out to the country, I always wanted to participate in farmers markets, so that's when an idea struck to start selling microgreens there!  It's a lot of work to set up and take down and plan everything just right but I did enjoy meeting the community and loved seeing what other farmers and entrepreneurs were selling.  There are so many creative hardworking people here!

This year, 2024, I discovered how to turn the microgreens into powder and that they lost no nutritional value during the drying process.  I absolutely love this way of getting my vitamins!  I am not a huge vegetable eater, so not having to struggle to get all my greens in my system everyday by using powder is a great benefit for me.  It doesn't mean I don't try to eat healthy though.  It's just a nice substitute.  I grow everything indoors for climate and bug control.  I find it is easier to maintain a clean environment indoors as well. I am very picky about the vegetables and greens I eat, so I am picky how i grow them.  If I won't eat them, I don't expect anyone else to.

This has been and continues to be a wonderful journey for me, as I love growing thing and am enjoying better health because of it!

Getting to know my community has also been a great reward!

Thes are the main three that people pick at market.  My experience is that when puting these in any stew, chilli or really anything, i dont even taste them at all.

Purple Kohlrabi

Is a German cabage that taste somewhat like broccoli.  Kohlrabi is so highly-valued in countries and cuisines around the world not only for its diversity in cooking applications but also because it might be full of nutrients and minerals. According to USDA National Nutrient Base, kohlrabi consists of calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, and calcium, as well as vitamins C, B-complex, A, and K. Along with that, it is also high in dietary fiber and antioxidant compounds such as phytochemicals and various carotenes.

A single cup of pea microgreens can provide 50% of an adult’s recommended daily Vitamin C allowance. This essential vitamin can help to protect an immune system that is depleted from stress, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, or obesity.  Pea micrgreens are also rich in Iron.

Broccoli

Considered a super food and is high in A, C, and E vitamins.  Broccoli is also high in antioxidants.
